German family law lays down rules for entering into marriage and life partnerships as well as their annulment. There are strict regulatory laws over the general legal effects of marriage (and/or life partnership), the conjugal and/or life-partnership law on property and divorce (and/or annulment of life partnership) and their legal consequences, like maintenance, awarding and increasing of compensation (i.e. reconciliation of the changing appreciation of assets). German law also contains regulations concerning other similar partnerships and betrothal. Furthermore, it regulates the obligation to pay maintenance, parental custody, access and the adoptive rights of parents and children.
It is in a Family Court that decisions are made concerning discrepancies over the up-bringing, custody or shared custody of children and other family issues.
